July Supplies

This month I am showing raw canvas, but you could use primed canvas instead.  I will be using both cotton raw canvas and linen raw canvas.  I am only demonstrating with linen to show you how to avoid problems with cotton raw canvas. Linen is super sensitive and difficult to use raw.  Not to mention outrageously expensive!

Raw canvas comes in many weights and weaves.  You want to get a medium weight of around 10-14ounces. And it should be smooth or portrait canvas.  It could also be listed as cotton duck. You do not want canvas that you can see light through.  Dick Blick in the US is great because you can buy raw cotton canvas by the yard online, instead of purchasing a roll.  Your local Fine Art supplier (not Michaels or Hobby Lobby) might sell it by the yard also.  This is not a type of canvas that you can buy at a fabric store.  Here's a good raw canvas if you just want to try it out without making a large investment:  https://www.dickblick.com/items/blick-unprimed-cotton-canvas-medium-weight-medium-smooth-texture-60-x-1-yd/

If you are having trouble finding raw canvas near you, and just want to try it out...Wyanne suggests buying a cotton drop cloth for painting from a hardware store.

Building A Stretcher Supplies - Optional

We use Masterpiece Monet Pro Stetcher Kits - these are nice because they take the guess work out of what cross braces to buy  https://www.dickblick.com/products/masterpiece-monet-pro-stretcher-bar-kit/

Right Angle of T-square

rubber mallet

drill

Staple Remover - Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D4WLS2A/

Stretching Pliers - Wyanne uses Canvalok stretching Pliers and systems. Unfortunately they are sold out, and not answering emails since Covid when they will be back in stock.  We're hoping they are okay.  These might work well because they are locking pliers like the Canvalok :https://www.amazon.com/Tools-VISE-GRIP-Locking-Original-23/dp/B0000TFGFU/

Other stretching Pliers: https://www.dickblick.com/categories/canvas/stretching-tools/

stapler - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077YV5SLJ/

Simplified Project - please note that this project is more about avoiding and recovering from problems when using raw canvas.  Wyanne will be using linen for this purpose.

8" x 8" stretcher - you could use any size

raw canvas - (see note above)

Liquitex Flow Aid - if Flow Aid is not available you could substitute a different brand like Golden or Winsor Newton.  Or in a pinch....liquid soap will also work for work that you do not intend to sell.

Water Mister measurements on the side is very helpful - this is to mix the Liquitex Flow Aid in and not your typical water mister. It should be a dedicated water sprayer only for the Flow Aid Solution.
